Making red-white-blue angel wings & decorating for July 4th/Lilly's birthday

Yesterday was my day to decorate the house for Lilly's birthday - and July 4th.  It was special that she was born on Independence Day.  I love all the cheerful "Lilly colors" - red, white, and blue.

I decided I wanted red/white/blue angel wings.  I couldn't find them anymore (always shocking when I can't find something on Ebay!) so I made my own.  I got out some angel wings I already had and my trusty cans of red and blue spray paint, and went outside.

I used paper to block off the parts I wasn't spraying.

The paint did not saturate the fluffly top feathers as much as the "regular" bottom feathers.  But I was still pleased with the unique results:

I thought the wings added a nice touch to the mantel area, where I have some Independence Day decor arranged, along with Lilly's birthday decor.

Lilly's birthday present for this year is a little vintage angel girl.  (I just love the little figurines that Japan produced in the 1950s.)

Lilly's Crazy Sock Monkey has his pinwheel and is ready to remember her and celebrate too:

Crazy Sock Monkey sits over Lilly's tree, which is covered in 4th of July decor:

The finishing touch is outside, where I hang bunting on the railing of Solomon's portico.  (Our second story porch.)  I love this bunting, and had it when Lilly was still alive.

Here is a picture of Little Firecracker, taken just a few days after her 1st birthday.  I loved holding her! You can see the bunting in the background:

I wonder what it would be like to be celebrating Lilly's 5th birthday with her in person.  What would she be like?  It makes me smile to imagine.

  1. Whenever I see someones house all decorated for a holiday, I get all excited and plan to do mine, but my plans quickly fall to the wayside. If I do manage to get it done, it will stay that way WAY past the next couple of holidays..... sigh. Yours looks fabulous.
I have a couple of those 50's figurines! I do not have a July 4 one but I love yours!! I buy them whenever I find them at the thrift store.
I love love love how the painted wings turned out! They no longer look like they "need" something in the middle. These are so perfect. Great idea!
It sure is hard to imagine little Lilly at 5. I try sometimes. She would be right between Chloe and Autumn but my mind just can't go there. I still remember Wendi as 14 and she would be 47 (?).
    Love you.

    1. I used to be obsessed with decorating for holidays. Now it's all too overwhelming for the most part, though I try and do my mantels and maybe a wreath. :)
I got the little figurine off Etsy. I will keep an eye out at the thrift stores - I am getting hooked on them! I got a pair the cutest baby chicks last year, for dirt cheap off Ebay. What is it about 1950s and Japan ....
I pinned the wings pic to Pinterest. Tabby said that was tacky but I don't care. Maybe someone else out there needs to have some.
It is sort of strange talking to Solomon about his big sister Lilly since she is so small and babyish in the pictures. I look forward to meeting Wendi in heaven one day.

    2. I respectfully disagree with Tabby. That is exactly what Pinterest is for. And Yes!, it will get copied!! :) See you soon.

  2. Oh love your decoration and that picture of you and Lily is breathtaking! Lily's birthday present is just perfect, I have lots of those little dolls and adore them:) Praying you and your family have a peaceful week and that Jesus is your strength and joy!

    1. Thank you so much Tesha! You'll have to post a pic of your little doll collection sometime. They are so sweet. :)

  3. looks lovely! is her birthday tree blooming? we bought 2 "Lilly" crape myrtles this spring for our backyard. they have both burst forth with "firecracker red."

saw your Betsy Ross Avon perfume girl on your mantle. guess she must be about 40 years old!

    1. It's got buds ... The trees seem to bloom here a little later than in Cary or where you all are.
